DeVillo Sloan,  Jr., 90, passed away on September 22. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Winifred Philben Sloan (Wini).

Born in Elbridge, Bill graduated from Elbridge Central School and was a WWII navy veteran. Under the GI bill, he attended Keystone Junior College and SUNY Cortland, where he earned B.S. and M.S.degrees.

He then began his long career in the North Syracuse School district, serving as teacher, principal, and director of reading as well as other positions.

Concurrent with his work in North Syracuse, he pursued graduate studies at Syracuse University and earned a Ph.D. His research involved improving methods of teaching and learning of the basics of reading and writing skills.

He served as President of the Central New York Chapter of the International Reading Association.

Bill felt privileged to have been a member of the North Syracuse educational community. He leaves many professional friends and associates.

Surviving are his son DeVillo Sloan III of Elbridge, NY and grandson Liam Andrew Sloan of Aurora, NY.

At his request, his remains have been donated to the Anatomical Gift Program of Upstate Medical University. Burial will be in Elbridge Rural Cemetery at a later date.
