Shirley H. Drummond, 92, of Jordan, NY, passed away at midnight on March 16, 2023; as usual, she didn’t waste even a minute of the day.
Shirley graduated from Plattsburg State Teachers College and spent most of her nearly 30-year career teaching kindergarten, first, and second grade at the Ramsdell Elementary School. Her door was always open to her students and their families, and she formed lasting relationships with many of them. She and her husband Greg, who taught many of the same students in high school, were added to the Jordan-Elbridge School District’s Wall of Honor in 2006.
Shirley had a deep passion for her community. When her children were young, she volunteered with the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and the Jordan Pool Committee. Later, she donated her time to various organizations, including the Friends of the Jordan Bramley Library and the Jordan Fall Festival Committee, which she chaired for over 25 years. She also served a term on the Elbridge Town Board, focusing on issues important to senior citizens.
For her service to community members of all ages, Shirley was recognized as an Intergenerational Volunteer by Onondaga County’s Office of Youth and Aging. When she finally accepted her own maturity, she joined the JE Seniors, volunteered to be the group’s treasurer, and enjoyed helping plan the group’s annual trips and activities.
She was an active parishioner of the Jordan United Methodist Church, where she served on the staff/parish relations council, helped develop the Kids Break program, and was a long-time volunteer at church suppers, receptions, and pie-baking marathons.
In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, gardening, and painting.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband, her sister Betty Askew, and her brother Cortis Hobbs. She is survived by her children Peter (Jen), Andy, and Susan (Patrick Hahn); grandchildren Ericka, Nick, Noah, Sam, Andrew, Rob (Lindsay), and Christopher (JD);great-grandchildren Justin, Merida, Ronan, Gregory, Michael, Arianna, Audrina, and Andrew, her brothers David and Harley Hobbs; and several nieces and nephews.
The family extends its deepest gratitude to the nursing and therapy teams at the Finger Lakes Center for Living, who cared for Shirley with exceptional generosity and compassion.
Calling hours are Tuesday, March 21st, from 3-7 PM at the Bush Funeral Home, 120 East Main Street in Elbridge, NY. Services will be held Wednesday at 11 AM at the Jordan United Methodist Church, 63 Elbridge Street in Jordan.
