Richard Platten Obituary

On Friday, December 15th, 2023, Dick left this earth surrounded by his family to join his Lord and Savior as a result of a brief illness. He was 83 years old. Dick was born January 17, 1940, in Seneca Falls, New York. He was the second child of M. Rowena and Howard Platten. He was a 1958 graduate of Mynderse Academy in Seneca Falls. Following high school, he attended Rochester Institute of Technology and SUNY Cortland where he received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. Dick later earned his Master of Science in Mathematics from the University of Maine at Orono. Dick met D. Karen (Hughey), his wife, in 1961 on a blind date set up by mutual friends, Don and Nancy Moore, and were married 6 months later. Dick and Karen were married for 58 years, until Karen’s passing in 2020. He accepted a teaching position at Jordan-Elbridge High School in 1965 at which time he and Karen moved to Jordan, New York. Once in Jordan, they both began to build their lives into what would become their adopted hometown of Jordan. Dick taught multiple generations of students’ mathematics over his 34 years as an educator, before retiring in 1999. At Jordan-Elbridge, Dick assumed multiple roles within the school, including but not limited to Mathematics Department chair, National Honor Society Advisor, Ski Club advisor and multiple graduating classes advisor. Dick was instrumental in bringing the Syracuse University Project Advance (SUPA) program to Jordan-Elbridge. He was a man devoted to his family and his community. He proudly served his community for over 42 years as Mayor of the Village of Jordan.  He was a 45-year member of the Jordan Masonic Lodge #386 F&AM. Dick served and chaired various boards and committees throughout the community including Boy Scouts Troop 57, The Jordan Community Council & Jordan Fall Festival Committee, Jordan United Methodist church steering & finance committees, The Jordan Memorial Pool committee and more. He enjoyed watching Syracuse University basketball & his NY Yankees, traveling (USA, Italy, Spain, Germany, Ireland & China), spending time with his family and riding his Harley motorcycle. Dick was predeceased by his wife Karen of 58 years (whom he dearly missed), his sister Gail Conley, his brother David A. Platten and his parents Howard E. Platten and M. Rowena (Yates) Platten. Dick is survived by his children David (Carrie) of Canandaigua, NY; Todd of Jordan, NY; Jennifer (Chad Tetreault) of South Burlington, VT; Chad (Erin) of Weedsport, NY; 8 grandchildren; Shelby Platten, Finley Killeen, Rowan Killeen, Emma Platten, Eric Platten, Samuel Platten, Sarah Ann Platten, Mariah Platten and his extra grandchild, Sami Moore, as well as his nephew, nieces, grandnephews & grandnieces. Friends and family are invited to join his family on Saturday, December 30th at the Jordan United Methodist Church at 63 Elbridge St. in Jordan, for calling hours from 11am to 2pm followed by a Masonic Service at 2:00pm, a Memorial Service at 2:30pm and then a Celebration of his Life/dinner at 4pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dick’s memory may be made to the Jordan United Methodist Church, PO Box 916, Jordan, NY 13080.
