Ellen McNeill, age 84, passed away peacefully, May 23, 2025 at her home in Elbridge, New York. Born in Syracuse in 1940 and raised in Memphis, NY, Ellen dedicated her life to education, family, and faith.
She was predeceased by her beloved parents, Ruth Scanlon McNeill and Henry McNeill, her brother William McNeill, nephew Bryan Place, brothers-in-law Ken Fenton, William Solomon Sr., and Gary Place. Ellen is survived by her siblings Martha Fenton, Veronica Solomon, Patrick McNeill, Kathleen McLaughlin (Ed), Regina Place, Michael McNeill, Henry McNeill (Nancy), and Mary Mannion (Joe).As well as nieces and nephews: Martin Fenton, Dan Fenton, Jim Fenton (Karen),Christine Place, William Solomon Jr., Chris McLaughlin (Terry), Patrick Solomon (Jennifer), Colleen Nutter (Brian), Kelly Scoville, Ryan Scoville (Judith), Tim Solomon (Tina), Larry McLaughlin (Jannette), Erinn Prebil (TJ), John McLaughlin, Kylah Klinge (Steve), and Liam McNeill (Jane). Also, among them, her devoted niece and caregiver, Kayley Brim (Chris), held a special place in Ellen’s world, providing steadfast care and companionship throughout her life. Additionally, several cousins, many great nieces and nephews, as well as countless former students.
A 1958 graduate of Jordan HS, Ellen taught at Weedsport Central Schools for 50 years and was deeply committed to her work as an educator, touching generations of young people’s lives with her warmth and patience. She also taught driver’s education for 35 years at both Weedsport and Jordan-Elbridge. Ellen held a master’s degree in special education and attended LeMoyne College, SUNY Oswego, and Syracuse University. She also spent a semester abroad in Belgium with an Experiment in International Living Program.
Beyond the classroom and driver's education car, Ellen was known for her deep love of family and friends. She always offered kindness, wisdom, generosity, and a welcoming spirit to all who knew her.
Calling hours will be 4-7pm Friday, May 30th at Bush Funeral Home 120 E. Main St. Elbridge. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Saturday, May 31st at St. Patrick Church, 28 N. Main St. Jordan. The Rite of Committal and burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Weedsport.
