Beth (Fillingham) Oney, 80, was raised in the Jordan-Elbridge area and graduated from Elbridge High School in 1958. Early in her career she worked at General Electric and as a switchboard operator at Midtown Hospital in Syracuse. She graduated from OCC and Syracuse University after raising four children plus a foster child with former husband Carl M. Oney. She went on to earn a graduate degree and certification in deaf education from Canisius College and Gallaudet University. She taught special education at Jordan-Elbridge High School and Middle School for 25 years, retiring in 2007. Beth taught hundreds of middle school children in reading, writing, math, science, and other subjects. She actively served Jordan United Methodist Church for many years on the prayer chain and coordinated a visitation ministry. She served as a JE sports booster, band booster, swim teacher at the Jordan Pool, Cub Scout den mother, cheerleading advisor, and on the PTA in the Jordan-Elbridge school district. She was a beloved mother and devoted teacher. She is survived by her children Dr. Stephen K. Oney, Matthew W. Oney (Kim), Dr. Tricia Oney Gabor (George), foster son Ray Douglas Porter (Katina), sister Linda Thomas, and sister-in-law Sandy Fillingham.
Beth is predeceased by her brother, Glenn William Fillingham and son Philip C. Oney.
Calling hours will be 1-4pm Saturday, Sept. 4th at Bush Funeral Home, 120 E. Main St. (Rt. 5) Elbridge. Funeral service will be 1:00pm Sunday Sept. 5th in the Jordan United Methodist Church.
