Melvin E. Brown of Jordan passed away Wednesday, April 12th at Crouse Hospital following a short illness. Born in Binghamton, Mel lived in Jordan for the past 40 years. He was a graduate of Broome Tech, SUNY Geneseo and he earned a Masters Degree from the University of Missouri. Mel was employed at Oswego State and CHAD in Auburn before being hired as the Human Resource Director at Cayuga Community College where he spent 30 years before retiring. While at CCC, one of Mel’s responsibilities included the annual College commencement exercises in which he took great pride as he wanted the graduates to enjoy one of the most memorable days in their lives.  Mel enjoyed his job at Jacobsen Oriental Rugs as a wonderful opportunity to begin a new career. Mel purchased an historic home in the Village of Jordan which had seen better days and he began a never ending project to restore it. Mel spent countless hours developing and maintaining beautiful gardens surrounding his home.  He was a communicant of Holy Family Church of Auburn. Mel was a member of the Auburn AOH, Jordan Lodge #386, and the Jordan Memorial Day Committee.

Buster, Tommy, Stripey, Jasper and Tags are five stray cats that were fortunate to fall into Mel’s care and become a part of his life.

Surviving are his brother David (Kathleen) Brown, 2 sisters Carol Scales and Mary Brown, step-mother Ruth Brown, nieces, nephews, and very special companion Linda Carr.

Friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am Monday in Holy Family Church, 85 North Street, Auburn. Burial will be in the Wyalusing, PA Cemetery.
