Glidden Sweet Doman

January 28, 1921 ~ June 6, 2016 (age 95) 95 Years Old

DOMAN. Glidden Sweet Doman, 95, of Granby,CT beloved husband of the late Joan (Hamilton) Doman passed away Monday, June 6, 2016 at Hartford Hospital.  Born January 28, 1921 in Syracuse, NY, son of the late Albert E. and Ruth (Sweet) Doman, he grew up in Elbridge, NY and attended the University of Michigan, graduating in 1942 with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering.  Glidden was a pioneer in the helicopter industry, starting his career with Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation during WWII, testing and adjusting all their helicopter rotor blades before delivery, to enable the helicopters to fly properly.  After the War he then ventured out on his own as founder and President of Doman Helicopters for 24 years in Danbury, CT.  He later worked for Boeing Helicopters and then worked for United Technologies / Hamilton Standard Division for 9 years, in Windsor Locks, CT, developing very large wind turbines.  This was not only his career but his passion, so even in his later years he continued to work, designing wind turbines for Aeritalia in Rome, Italy, and then founded another wind turbine business in 2003, Gamma Ventures, which he was president of until he passed away.  Glidden was a founding member of the American Helicopter Society, and has two of his helicopters on display at the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks.  As a youth he was the winner of the 1936 Syracuse Regional Soap Box Derby race and competed in the national race in Cleveland.  He is survived by a son, Steve Doman and his wife Margaret of Redmond, WA; two daughters, Terry Gibbon and her husband Stephen of Medford Lakes, NJ,  JoAnn Barefoot of Boston, MA; 8 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held Sunday, June 12, 2016, 1:00 PM in Elbridge Rural Cemetery, Elbridge, NY with the Rev. Thomas Bell officiating.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to:  New England Air Museum, 36 Perimeter Rd., Windsor Locks, CT 06096. The Bush Funeral Home of Elbridge has charge of local arrangements.
